Description

Houses on the western side of the Trolleybus Shed
(Rollikkahallin länsipuolen talot)
Pirkankatu 39-59

A small row of timber houses were constructed at the turn of the 1920s up to Pispala's border gate, of which three were designed by Bertel Strömmer in 1921. Pirkankatu 47 has best remained in its original form. The pillar subject of the corner boards and the semi-circle attic windows are standard characteristics of the classicist style. The house also contains preserved old wooden stoves and ovens. Pirkankatu 51 and 57 have undergone greater alterations. One of the more attractive houses on the row is Pirkankatu 41, which was designed by K.O. Aro in 1923. The house's 12-sectioned windows and strongly patterned window sides give it a divergent appearance from the others. The three houses immediately after the trolleybus shed have been nicely preserved.

I'm curious to know a few things - Image 4: what is the walkway on the roof for?
In general - what was the cellar used for? Were they standing-height inside? Would they be snowed in in winter?

All splendid in their own modest ways. Few at all like this in the antipodes.
